之前有朋友留言，powwow 没弄明白啥意思。其实是聚会／会议的意思。

查字典如下：

查了字典才发现，不是只有我一个人迷糊。

英文里有些词拼写和读音对于native speaker 来说貌似天差地别，对于咱们“老外”来说，就好像很接近，容易搞混。

今天分享一个小胜利：
关系非常好的同事聊天时跟我开了个玩笑，说是要去搞 prospecting，然后看我的反应。我大脑高速运转找到以前看过的美剧《dead wood》之后，云淡风轻地问：looking for gold？他点点头很满意地继续我们的谈话。第二天他故技重施，另外一位亚裔同事没通过测试，一脸困惑地问：what？

就像“笑侠”朋友说的，英文对话中咱们移民闪光甚至是不露怯的每一个时刻，都是长期努力的结果啊。这里顺便推荐一下《dead wood》， 对美国淘金历史感兴趣的朋友可以看看。

prospect 我比较熟悉的是展望／前景的意思，它还有勘探的意思。

to tell someone about something, to make sure they understand or approve:

我觉得澳式英语跟美式英语还是有区别的，很多在美国常用的表达澳洲并不常用，一时想不起来例子了。我的感觉是很多美式的表达方法跟澳洲人讲他们会觉得很奇怪， 所以我倒觉得也可以多看看澳剧和英剧，因为英式英语在澳洲是广泛接受的。
推荐几部好看的澳剧：

想推荐 designated survivor, 主角是24小时的大英雄 Jack Bauer 的扮演者 Keifer Sutherland， 剧情是因总统和内阁大部遭恐袭殒命，被解职的政府官员被预案选中紧急就职美国总统。其实就是美版宫斗，其中台词都比较讲究，值得琢磨。剧情节奏兼顾剧情片和动作片，也并不枯燥。

容易读混听错的几个词：

“Phase” 可以用作名詞(Noun)或動詞(Verb)，用作名詞的時候，”Phase” 是「時期」、「階段」的意思。

(1) Every teenager has a rebellious phase.
每位年青人都有反叛時期。

(2) The second phase of this development project will begin next July.
這建案的第二期會在明年七月開始。

用作動詞的時候，”Phase” 是「分段」、「逐步」的意思，通常 “Phase” 後面都會跟著一個介詞(Preposition)，以Phrasal verb的形態出現喔。

(3) The government will phase out this policy over the next two years.
政府在未來兩年會逐步淘汰這項政策。[“Phase out” 是逐步淘汰的意思]

(4) This development project is being phased over ten years.
這項建案會在十年期間逐步執行。



“Phrase” 也是可以用作名詞或動詞喔。

用作名詞的時候，”Phrase” 是「短句」、「片語」的意思。

(5) Is there something wrong with this phrase?
這短句有甚麼問題嗎?

用作動詞的時候，”Phrase” 是「措辭」、「表達」的意思。

Paste vs paced
Paste and paced are two words that are pronounced in the same fashion but have different spellings and different meanings. They are homophones.  We will look at the definitions of paste and paced, where these two words came from and some examples of their use in sentences.
