Benefits of Methylated Spirits

Methylated spirits is a raw alcohol and menthol. The menthol gives it a strong smell and taste, so it isn’t
mistaken for water. It’s a solvent for paints, so it removes ink, texta, felt pen marks etc and is also a great all
purpose cleaner. Shannon suggests mixing it 50/50 with water and spraying the solution on windows to clean
the panes so they sparkle. Wipe the solution off again using paper towels – rubbing vertically for outside panes
(following the rain line) and horizontally for interior panes. Don’t use newspaper…it used to work when it
contained lampblack (which was a great glass polish) but it doesn’t contain it anymore, it now contains latex and
will leave smear marks. Metho is also great for cleaning white boards, even if you’ve used a permanent marker
on the board, just dampen a pair of pantyhose with the metho and wipe it over the board, then use paper towel to
polish it off.
Problem: Toxic and un-used cleaning products in the laundry

Problem: Dirty carpets

You can steam clean your own carpets (ideally twice a year) using a rented carpet cleaner and Shannon’s special carpet cleaning mix – this consists of: the carpet cleaner that comes with the machine (quarter of a cup), 2 tablespoons each of white vinegar (strong fabric cleaner); bicarb soda (a salt based general cleaner) and methylated spirits (effective on ink stains). Then add two teaspoons each of glycerine (loosens stains) and eucalyptus oil (makes carpet small fresh). If you have a serious problem area like our families’ scorched plastic burn mark, best to patch it using another piece of carpet from a hidden spot. First, measure the stain to see how much spare carpet you need using a cardboard cut-out as a template, then (using a stanley knife), cut around the template on the clean section of carpet and use this new piece as a template to cut around the stain itself - creating an exact fit. Cut 4 pieces of jute webbing to fit widthways half under the main carpet and half under the new cut-out and add carpet adhesive all over the webbing (and in the middle section too) before sticking the new piece firmly down on top and weighting it with a heavy book for 24 hours. Once you’ve brushed the edges the patched section will be barely visible
Problem: Dirty Window Panes

Use methylated spirits in water. Add 500ml of methylated spirits to 500ml water in a litre spray bottle. Then using a clean, damp cloth wipe horizontally inside and vertically outside. The vertical wipes outside follow the rainfall and are less likely to trap water droplets, dust etc so will stay cleaner for longer.
Problem: Pen marks on upholstery

Most pens contain a spirit base, which evaporates leaving the pigment behind. By reapplying more
of the same spirit, the pigment liquefies (or softens) and wipes away. So, after testing a small area,
using the weakest to the most potent solvents in the following order: White Vinegar, Methylated
Spirits, White Spirits, Acetone - Shannon works out it’s a White Spirit based solvent because cotton
bud containing W.S. immediately lifts the ink off the chair. So she can then set about carefully reapplying
that solution to the entire stain using a cotton bud. She then waited for 10 minutes for the
spirit to do it’s job before giving it another good rub with more White Spirits on a pantyhose…it may
take a little elbow grease to remove but eventually, the mark should disappear. Methylated spirits
will in turn lift the white spirits.
Problem: Mouldy Airless Bedroom

It’s not a good idea to cover your only window with large items of furniture. For one, the room gets
little natural light and even less ventilation, (in an already damp space – this creates the ideal
environment for mould production)…so the first thing they do in Hendrix’s bedroom is re-position
her furniture, moving her bed under the fresh air of the window and away from the ceiling manhole
(where she was more likely to be covered in dust from the ceiling cavity). Once the furniture was
out, the room was treated for mould – using a quarter of a teaspoon of Oil of Cloves in a litre of water
spray bottle and the mould sprayed, left overnight and then wiped away with a damp cloth.
The window panes are then cleaned using a 50/50 solution of methylated
spirits and water. |
