THE man suspected of murdering his wife in New Zealand and leaving his daughter at a Melbourne train station is due in Auckland early tomorrow morning (AEDT).

Nai Yin Xue is in the custody of United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers for the duration of the flight.

He will be arrested by Operation Patch investigation team members on his arrival at Auckland.

Xue is wanted for the alleged murder of his wife in Auckland last September.

He fled to America after abandoning his three-year-old daughter Quan Xun Xue in a Melbourne railway station.

She has since returned to China.

Last week, after Xue evaded police for nearly six months, six members of a Chinese family in the small town of Chamblee in Atlanta, Georgia, recognised him from a picture in a Chinese journal.

They double checked his image on the America's Most Wanted website before all six leapt on him, tying his hands with his belt and knotting his trousers around his ankles so he could not run off.

Xue has been visited by New Zealand police while in custody.

He is expected to appear in Auckland District Court.

The last lingering memory Stella Li has of her best friend An An Liu, the doting mother of dumped toddler Pumpkin, is the revelation that she had "something very secret" to tell.

But there was never a chance to discover what that secret was.

Just two weeks after Stella caught up with An An in the hope of finding out, the 28-year-old was brutally murdered.

According to coroner's documents seen by Sunday News, her death was caused by strangulation.

And sources close to the family and the case claim An An was hiding the fact she was pregnant.

That was the reason, they say, An An had told Stella she wanted to "talk".

"Annie been in Wellington, and Nai Yin Xue (An An's husband) had told me she was seeing another man there," Stella, a justice of the peace and Queen's Service Medal recipient, told Sunday News.

"When she came back, I called her and asked her where she had been and what she had been doing. She whispered to me saying she couldn't explain on the telephone.

"But I wanted to know, so I went around to her house.

"Her husband was there so she couldn't say anything but she told me she had something very secret to tell."

That evening the three shared dinner at an Asian restaurant. And that was the last time Stella saw her friend.

Like the rest of the country, she was shocked to turn on the television to learn that three-year-old Pumpkin Qian Xun Xue was abandoned by her father in Melbourne and a few days later to be given the grim news that An An's body had been found in the boot of a car outside the couple's Mt Roskill, Auckland home.

An An wrote about her Wellington lover whose name has not been revealed in her internet blog.

In it, she spoke about her "wounded heart".

"I found myself deeply in love with this a little bad and very cute guy.

"He is a married man, even has a two-year-old daughter. This dooms he and I to a fleeting affair.

"The deeper the love, the most painful is the hurt."

An An went on to say she returned to Auckland because the man's wife had returned home.

"I drove away and fled our little love nest, fled the city that belongs to him," she wrote.

Stella told Sunday News that Nai Yin Xue mentioned "several times" that An An was with another man, although he didn't say where.

"At first when he started saying these things I thought he was joking but I know he wasn't now because of the angry face he would always have," Stella said.

Asked about last week's citizen's arrest of the 54-year-old martial arts expert by members of the Chinese community in the United States, Stella added: "I heard about it on the radio and instantly I thought `good'.

"I don't know why it took so long for them to find him. If he has done anything to Annie then he deserves to be put before the judges."

Police are tight-lipped over when Nai Yin Xue will land in New Zealand.

The arrival of Xue, 53, signals the end of an almost six-month manhunt that began after the fugitive abandoned his daughter Qian Xun Xue - who became known as Pumpkin - at a Melbourne train station in September.

Two days later New Zealand police discovered the body of Xue's wife Anan Liu in the boot of a car which had been left outside her Auckland home.

Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Scott, the New Zealand officer in charge of the case, said Xue was now in police custody.

He said police would consider other charges against Xue in the future.

Mr Scott said Xue was manacled on the way down from Los Angeles.

He said today was "a great day" for Operation Patch.

"Obviously matters around the murder charge are before the courts so I can't say too much more on that, but I have only praise for the manner which New Zealand and US officials have worked together to find and return Mr Xue to NZ," said Mr Scott.

The deportation was being managed by the American Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, whose officials will accompany him on the flight.

Police had worked hard on the case for the past five months and were ready to proceed, Mr Scott said.

Police are keen for the Chinese group who captured Xue in Georgia on February 28 to receive the US$10,000 (NZ$12,700) reward offered for his capture.

The group lured him to a meeting, hogtied him with his own belt and trousers and sat on him till police arrived.

Mr Scott praised their effort and said they deserved the reward. "We've been concentrating on getting [Xue] back and this week we'll be able to deal with issues around the reward."

He would not comment on reports that Ms Liu was pregnant when she died, saying the matter was before the courts and to discuss it could prejudice any case.

A large media contingent was waiting at the airport this morning for the plane carrying Xue to arrive.

Police said Xue would be taken to Auckland Central Police Station for processing and would appear in court later today.

Red-faced authorities have admitted the man who fled New Zealand after allegedly murdering his wife and dumping his 3-year-old daughter Pumpkin at a Melbourne railway station was right under their noses in Auckland later the same day.

Until now it was widely believed that murder suspect Nai Yin Xue, 54, had made his escape on a direct flight from Melbourne to Los Angeles, but the Herald on Sunday can reveal that nine hours after abandoning his daughter, Xue was back in Auckland, sitting at the airport.

The self-proclaimed martial arts expert spent nearly two hours in a transit lounge at Auckland International Airport on September 15 last year, drinking coffee and chatting with other passengers while just 20km away his wife's badly beaten body lay decomposing in the boot of his car.

Back in Australia, Victorian police were scrambling to confirm the identity of young Qian Xue Xue, clueless to the fact her father had already slipped out of the country and was about to make his escape to Los Angeles.

At 6.30pm, two hours after arriving in Auckland. Xue casually boarded Qantas flight QF25 for an 11-hour flight to Los Angeles where he spent five months on the run.

Police, already facing claims of incompetence over the time they took to find the body of Xue's wife Anan Liu, yesterday played down the significance of Xue returning to Auckland just days after he had allegedly murdered his wife.

The officer heading the inquiry, Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Scott, said police were only alerted to the identity of the abandoned girl on Sunday night, 24 hours after Xue's two-hour stopover in Auckland.

The difficulty was the fact there was nothing on young Qian Xue to give police any clue as to her identity, Scott said.

It was only after studying CCTV footage taken at Southern Cross Station in Melbourne that police were able to ascertain she was the daughter of Xue. By that time 24 hours had lapsed and Xue had already arrived in Los Angeles.

Police did contact Melbourne Airport and were able to confirm on Sunday night Xue had flown out of the country. Checks with Los Angeles Airport later turned up security footage which showed a smiling Xue offering a double thumbs-up as he passed through security.

"It took hours and hours and hours to identify him. Initially they [Victorian police] had very little to go on," Scott said.

"They did all they could. The simple fact was that the poor little girl was left by herself. It just took time to work out who she was."

Once his identity was confirmed police went to work trying to locate his estranged wife and Qian's 27-year-old mother, cordoning off Xue's battered white weatherboard house in Mt Roskill.

Forty-five hours later they decided to check the boot of a silver Honda parked outside the house. Inside the boot was Liu's body.

Embarrassed police later defended their decision not to make an earlier search of the car, claiming they did not have the proper warrants.

Scott accepted that had police been able to identify Qian Xue earlier they may well have apprehended her father in Auckland, avoiding what became an expensive, five-month manhunt through the United States.

But he defended the actions of police saying they had acted as swiftly as they could under the circumstances.

"I think police did a great job. They did all they could," Scott said.

Xue was captured in Georgia in March after a dramatic citizens' arrest by members of the local Chinese community recognised him from coverage they had seen on TV show America's Most Wanted.

He will appear in September in Auckland for a depositions hearing.

An Auckland man facing murder charges who was on the run in the United States for five months claims he didn't kill his wife.

Nai Yin Xue, 54, is in custody charged with murdering Anan Liu, 27, whose body was found in the boot of Xue's car outside their Auckland home in September last year.

Xue left New Zealand in September and abandoned his three-year-old daughter Qian Xun Xue at a Melbourne railway station before heading to the United States.

He was eventually captured by five Chinese Americans at a town just north of Atlanta, Georgia.

Xue's lawyer Chris Comeskey said his client believed Liu was killed by a man she had met a few weeks earlier, the Herald on Sunday reported.

Comeskey said Xue had given him the man's name and details and a private investigator would be hired to try to track the man down so he could be questioned.

Xue believed the man killed Liu and then dumped her body in the back of the car in an effort to frame Xue, the newspaper reported.

Qian Xun, who became known as Pumpkin, currently lives with her grandmother in China.

A Chinese martial arts instructor who abandoned his toddler on a Melbourne railway platform strangled his wife to death, the Auckland District Court was told this morning.

Naiyin Xue is accused of murdering Anan Liu, 27, between September 11 and 13 last year.

It is alleged that after he killed her in Auckland he fled with their three-year-old Qian Xun Xue - nicknamed Pumpkin because of the clothing label she was wearing - and abandoned her at Southern Cross Station.

Xue, 53, was arrested on the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia, on February 28, after a six-month manhunt across the US.

Two Justices of the Peace began a two day deposition hearing this morning with high-profile barrister Chris Comesky acting for Xue and Brian Dickey for the Crown.

Mr Dickey told the court that evidence will show that Mrs Liu died from ligature strangulation, carried out by Xue with a yellow coloured dress tie that he owned.

The death followed a sequence of domestic violence which saw Mrs Liu move away with the child to Wellington.

Mr Dickey said Xue went to Wellington with an axe "to do harm to …. his wife."

The intention was to get her to return to Auckland.

The hearing will determine whether a case exists to send it to trial in the High Court.

Most of the evidence is to be submitted by consent and Mr Dickey said he would call six witnesses.

At the end of the expected two day hearing Xue will be asked to plea to the charge that he killed his wife.

A NEW Zealand man accused of murdering his wife before fleeing to Australia and dumping his three-year-old daughter at a Melbourne railway station will stand trial next year.

Nai Yin Xue, 55, of Auckland, is charged with murdering his wife An An Liu, 27, in September last year.

Her body was found in the boot of the family car outside their home in the Auckland suburb of Mount Roskill, on September 19, four days after Mr Xue allegedly abandoned his daughter Qian Xun Xue at Melbourne's Southern Cross station.

Mr Xue became the centre of an international manhunt after the girl, who was dubbed Pumpkin for the brand of clothing she was wearing, was found at the station on September 15 last year.

Mr Xue then flew to the US but was caught and extradited after an international police alert.

The girl now lives with her grandmother in China.

Mr Xue was ordered to stand trial following a preliminary hearing in Auckland District Court last month and yesterday the High Court in Auckland set a trial date of June 2 next year.

The hearing is expected to take three weeks.

据2009年6月2日《悉尼晨锋报》报道，薛乃印涉嫌弑妻妻女案今天上午在新西兰奥克兰高等法院进行。当法官问薛乃印对控方提出的谋杀指控是否认罪时，五十五岁的薛乃印在庭上用英文高声回答法官Hugh Williams：I am not guilty, I am innocent！（我没有犯罪！我是清白无辜的！）。

有媒体记者形容薛乃印当时的态度几乎是“目中无人”。当法庭进行挑选陪审员的程序时，薛乃印在审判席上坐下，法警曾试图让他站起来，但薛乃印对法警的举动做出了明显的反抗。随后法警任由他坐下，而没有继续要求他站起来。

较早前，曾有报道称薛乃印的辩护律师团队会对陪审员的背景进行调查，但从今天的庭审来看，该辩护团对并未这么做。

经过控辩双方的共同筛选，12名陪审员全部为女性。一个全部由女性组成的陪审团负责裁决一宗杀人案，这在新西兰历史上并不常见。来自新西兰、澳洲、美国的目击证人总数就达110人之多，澳洲的目击者包括海关官员、铁路工作者和墨尔本市中心旅行社人员都将通过视频连接做呈堂证供。

在今天对薛乃印案的庭审中，控方传召了本案的第一位证人--谢乃泉（Nai Tran Xie，音译，）。

谢乃泉在庭上重复了他早前向警方提供的一份口供，向控辩双方如实介绍了他所了解到的薛乃印家庭生活状况。谢乃泉指出，刘安安曾经告诉他，薛乃印曾于2006年在一次争吵之后殴打了她，并伤到了她和薛的女儿薛千寻。

据悉，谢乃泉其实是薛乃印在奥克兰所收的大徒弟，二人的友谊甚笃。谢乃泉先生今年40多岁，广东人，他女儿的年龄与薛千寻相仿，为此两家的孩子曾常常在一起玩耍。薛乃印对谢乃泉先生的印象颇佳，二人此前成经常出席一些活动并配合进行武术表演。

薛乃印曾对他人公开说过，谢乃泉是一个好人，也是他最好的朋友，将来如果他死了，能够为他“送终”的就是这位徒弟。

法庭审理日程安排显示，谢乃泉将于明天接受控辩双方的交叉诘问质询。

The father of a little girl abandoned at a Melbourne train station has told a New Zealand court he did not murder the toddler's mother.

Nai Yin Xue, 55, appeared in Auckland's High Court on Tuesday accused of killing his wife An An Liu, 27, and stuffing her body into the boot of his car outside the family's Auckland home in September 2007.

The couple's three-year-old daughter, Qian Xun Xue, nicknamed Pumpkin, was found alone at Melbourne's Southern Cross station a few days later.

Xue, a newspaper publisher and martial arts instructor, flew to the United States soon after and was apprehended in a citizens arrest after his photo appeared on the TV show America's Most Wanted, and extradited to New Zealand.

On the first day of his trial on Tuesday, Xue, dressed in a white shirt, appeared calm and attentive and told Justice Hugh Williams he was not responsible for his wife's death.

"I'm not guilty. I'm innocent," the Chinese national told the court in English.

A jury of 12 women has been empanelled for the trial, which is expected to go for five weeks and include evidence from more than 110 witnesses from New Zealand, Australia and the US.

Australian witnesses, including customs officials, railway staff and travel agents Xue booked his onward journey through, are expected to give evidence via video link.
