The identity of the couple was yesterday confirmed as Indian and Tanzanian born Aravindan and Chanda Balakrishnan as police stepped up their inquiry into the bizarre and disturbing holding of the women as slaves. Police began door-to-door inquiries near the sect’s home in Peckford Place, Brixton. They have also visited 13 other London addresses the group had stayed in. The Balakrishnans, aged 73 and 67, were well known to police and security authorities in the mid 1970s after setting up an extreme left-wing squat in a bookshop called the Mao Zedong Memorial Centre in Brixton. They came to Britain in the 1960s. Aravindan Balakrishnan, who was known as Comrade Bala, was a former member of the national executive committee of the Communist Party of England (Marxist-Leninist) but was suspended in 1974 for pursuing “conspiratorial and splittist activities”. The couple were arrested in 1978 when police stormed the bookshop to shut it down and both served a prison sentence for assaulting an officer during the raid. Between them they were jailed eight times during the 1970s but then lay low. “They were a tiny, very tight-knit group clearly under the spell of their leader,” said Professor Steve Rayner, an Oxford University academic who researched the Maoist group at the time. Prof Rayner said most of the members were foreignborn and had difficulty adjusting to the UK way of life. Police suspect that the two older women, a 57-year-old Irish woman and a 69-year-old Malaysian woman, may have begun living with the couple shortly after the cult was closed down. They believe they never left because they had been brainwashed and were genuinely terrified. |
