![]() ![]() ![]() 更多图片 原文 http://www.news.com.au/realestat ... q3era-1226746357682 IT IS the house that spite built and now the unusual shaped home is being put up for sale. The Montlake Spite House in Seattle, Washington, is 77 square metres. The back of the house is just 1.4 metres wide and expands out to become 4.5 metres wide at the front, meaning it resembles a v-shape like a wedge or a pizza slice. The home was built on the corner of 24th Avenue East and East Boston streets in 1925 and folklore differs on why someone would build a house so narrow. However almost everyone agrees that it is a 'spite house' - a property that is built with the specific intention of irritating neighbours by blocking light or access to neighbouring buildings. Most believe that the odd structure was built following a bitter divorce proceeding. The story goes that the husband was awarded the house, while the wife ended up with just the front yard. So out of spite she is said to have built the tiny home to annoy her husband. The current owner Lisa Horton, who has been renting the place since 2000, says she heard a different story about the origins of the house. She tells Quirksee.org that she was told the owner went back to Germany and allowed someone to build on his land with his only request that he be left enough space to build his own home. When he returned he was shocked to see that the home that was built occupied most of the land. "Out of spite, he [the landowner] built that funny little pie-shaped home [as a barrier]," Ms Horton said. "It’s the lore. I don’t think there’s any official history of it anywhere." "Some have called it a houseboat on land. It’s whimsical. It makes you smile," she said. "People would leave notes in the mailbox - neat little stories from people [that start], ‘I remember when I was a little girl,’" Ms Horton said. "When I’m out gardening, people would stop and ask questions." The Seattle 'spite house' was built very close to the neighbouring property. Once inside the house however the two-bedroom home is actually quite roomy, except for the kitchen where it significantly narrows. It has been listed for sale at $397,500 and is being pitched as a "great condo alternative." |
