"I have caused my wife and children harm, shame, humiliation," the 57-year-old mayor admitted on current affairs TV program Campbell Live, while vowing to stay in office. Bevan Chuang, 32, anonymously revealed details of the sexual relationship to the Whale Oil blog, run by Cameron Slater. Slater's father acted as the campaign manager for Mr Brown’s rival John Palino in the mayoral election. Mr Palino said he had no knowledge of the affair or the woman involved, however Mr Brown said he believes "there is an element of political endeavour around the timing of this announcement. "The final count is not done, and ... in my view, is a clear will or determination to try and force a resignation, to try and in effect destroy me." Ms Chuang alleges she and Brown were once caught by a security guard having sex in the Town Hall, the New Zealand Herald reports. The pair met in May 2011 at a council function. She claims Mr Brown texted and called her frequently in the following weeks, complimenting her appearance, before they became lovers. Ms Chuang says she did not initially find him attractive but found his power and influence "intoxicating", comparing herself to US White House intern Monica Lewinsky, who had an affair with President Bill Clinton. The affair with Ms Chuang is believed to have started in mid-2011, about a year after Mr Brown's wife was treated for throat cancer. With failed political aspirations of her own – she was an unsuccessful candidate in a recent local election – Ms Chuang made headlines last year when she told a journalist she was desperate to have a "dragon baby" in 2012, and was willing to seek artificial insemination to do so. Ms Chuang was born in Hong Kong and is a member of the Ethnic Peoples Advisory Panel to the Auckland Council. Mr Brown says he did not spend any council money on his affair but it is alleged it occurred during work hours and in the council building, including his office. Ms Chuang issued a statement via the Whale Oil site that first broke the news, saying she believed Brown had only one option left - and that was to resign. "He could [no] longer command any respect among those who'd previously issued him with a mandate to lead Auckland. She said as a practising Catholic the hypocrisy of Brown's conduct was extraordinary." |
