Good Duck at Good Luck Unassumingly tucked away on the busy Liverpool Road, this Beijingness restaurant was half full when we walked in on a Tuesday night. Diners chatting in an authentic Beijingness tone seemed to reassure the authenticity of its offerings. The menu read like a complete list of Beijingness food. Their specialty, as the huge picture on its exterior wall had promoted, is the Peking duck ($50). Either their ducks are so popular or so short-supplied, we were told to wait for an hour for the duck to be roasted. While waiting we learned that an order must be placed in advance if you come for the duck and, surprisingly, they do not serve take-aways, not even if you pay the same price and come to pick up yourselves. The owner, after whom the restaurant is named, is a friendly Beijingness and seemed to be quite proud of his ducks and went on to tell us that the peeling, an essential part of serving the duck, cannot be done well without months of practice. Finally, it arrived peeled and served in the shape of a duck on a plate surrounded by smaller plates of shredded cucumbers, scallions and sweet sauce. House made pancakes came hot in a tiny little bamboo steamer. Like watching the cook skillfully turning the whole duck into think and crispy pieces within a minute, the wrapping is half the fun. My first mouthful of China’s famous duck, wrapped tight in the pancake with scallions, cucumbers and sweet sauce, was good but now Wow, perhaps because my expectations had been raised high after so many years of wanting it and so much I had heard and read about it. Just as we thought one Peking duck is too much for two people, the rest of the whole duck came in a big bowl with an even bigger ladle. The soup was yummy and thick with cabbages. The location is not great for people without a car and the nearest train station (Burwood Station) is a good 20 minute walk---just what we needed to work off a sumptuous meal!
