Skills crunch pumps IT pay

ACROSS-the-board skills shortages have pushed computer and communications salaries up 12 per cent in the past six months, according to a survey from recruiter Ambition Technology.
Strong demand for technology workers in Canberra is also starting to affect the NSW government, which is suffering skills shortages as staff rush in to fill a void in the nation's capital.
The intense demand for skills in Canberra is being driven by a number of major projects including the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs' $495 million Systems for People project, Ambition managing director Andy Cross said.
Skills that are in demand include Java and .Net applications development experience and SAP and Oracle expertise.
"The market has been, and remains, hot with demand outstripping supply," said Mr Cross.
"Salaries have jumped 12 per cent and the technology recruitment market can't bridge the demand gap. That means the war for talent will continue in 2007."
Mr Cross said that the pending introduction of new federal anti-money laundering laws in particular would trigger further shortages in security and data management skills.
He said that data management positions would be "very difficult" to fill.
"It's not an attractive area for people. Security has a bit more sex appeal, but data management is going to be a struggle," Mr Cross said. |
