The plan to make mathematics compulsory for all NSW HSC students from 2026 has been scrapped, with NESA confirming it will remain optional, though new, more rigorous maths syllabuses were released for Years 11-12 in 2024 to encourage uptake. While the compulsory mandate is off the table for now, the government is focused on strengthening earlier math education (K-10) and evaluating the HSC minimum standard for numeracy to ensure students build essential skills for life and future careers, addressing teacher shortages as a key concern.
Key Points:
Compulsory Plan Cancelled: The previous plan to make maths mandatory for the HSC in 2026 (for the first cohort in 2026) has been dumped.
Maths Remains Optional: Mathematics is still an elective subject for Years 11 and 12, with many students still choosing it (around 85% in 2023).
New Syllabuses: Updated Year 11 and 12 Maths syllabuses were rolled out in 2024 to build stronger foundations and encourage more students to continue with the subject.
Focus on Early Years: The NSW government is prioritizing earlier interventions in K-10 to boost numeracy skills before students reach senior years.
Teacher Shortage: Addressing the shortage of qualified maths teachers is seen as crucial to improving overall maths outcomes, according to bodies like the ABC and the Sydney Morning Herald.
HSC Minimum Standard: NESA will also evaluate the existing HSC Minimum Standard (an online numeracy, reading, and writing test).
