Q:when you say its not worth setting up a trust unless you have a big chunk to tip in straighr away...is that due to the setup costs of the trust?
I get that it might cost a couple of grand to setup
Q: So all a trust lets you do is discretionary distributions of investment income between beneficiaries in the trust + a corporate trustee, which means you can cap your investment tax rate at 30%.
Trust has setup costs and then costs $1000-$1500/yr in audit costs + the cost of corporate trustee if used
So to save those costs in taxes, you'd need ~3000 in income, to generate that income at 6% return you need something like $100000 (assume 50% dividend 50% capital growth), assuming you can distribute to someone on 0% tax rate.
If you cant distribute to 0% tax rate but instead are taking advantage of capping at 30% vs 32/37/45, then you'd need between 600,000 and 1m just to break even.
Q: but if its something im looking to hold for 20-30years wonf that become negligible
A: You need to keep in mind political risk, Labor are already talking about taxing all trust income at 30%, if you wont achieve benefits from a trust for 10-15 years have to consider whether those benefits will still be available.
Also keep in mind that early costs compound in missed future income. |
