And while the best performing schools are still in Sydney' richer east and northern areas, an analysis of the data shows government schools have beaten high fee-charging private colleges - winning top spot in 24 of the state's 38 education regions.
The state's top school - selective James Ruse Agricultural High in Carlingford - improved its own stratospheric position by 10 percentage points in the past two years to 75.14 per cent.
Out west, Chifley College's Bidwill campus has rocketed up the rankings in the Mount Druitt region from 12th to second, with seven distinguished achiever mentions.
Schools such as Parramatta High, Crestwood High, Northmead High and Bossley Park High also have increased their strike rate while Macquarie Fields High again flew the flag for the southwest.
In Sydney's inner-west, Dulwich High School of Visual Arts and Design increased its distinguished achiever mentions from zero to 17. Ashfield Boys High improved its position in scores of over 90 to 7.14 per cent.
In the Hornsby region, Carlingford High almost doubled its strike rate from 7.76 per cent to 14.45 (151 distinguished achievers).
Selective Sydney Girls High and Sydney Boys High took out first and second spot in the hotly contested city and Eastern Suburbs region - ahead of five private schools charging fees of up to $24,000 a year.
Across the Harbour North Sydney Girls High and North Sydney Boys High also came first and second - followed by 13 of the state's most prestigious private colleges.
In Sydney's northwest, high performing Cherrybrook Technology High principal Gary Johnson said a positive learning culture was central to his school's success.
"We celebrate our academic achievements - this is not a school where it is cool to be a fool," he said. "We support success here. Our staff are hardworking, we have high expectations and they deliver."
In Parramatta region, Crestwood High more than doubled its strike rate from 3.89 per cent to 8.35 per cent, Northmead High improved from 1.44 per cent to 4.69 and Parramatta High from 2.79 per cent to 4.16.
The private and well-resourced Kings School improved from 14.46 per cent to 26.73 per cent.
Hurlstone Agricultural High again topped the Liverpool region but Macquarie Fields High boosted its strike rate by more than a percentage point and Cecil Hills High, Liverpool Girls and Holsworthy High also improved.
St Stanislaus' College, Bathurst, improved its position despite being rocked by arrests of former staff and allegations of paedophilia.
Northern Beaches Secondary College, Balgowlah Boys campus, tripled its rating, while in the south Kingsgrove North High, Kingsgrove High and Moorefields Girls High improved.
In Sutherland-Cronulla, Menai High almost tripled its rate, Engadine High almost doubled its rate and Cronulla High came from last place to 9th out of 20.
