Sundowners: A Brief Company History
Sundowners has a long and exciting history operating adventure trips throughout the world. We ran the first of many group journeys in the late 1960’s – an exciting overland trip across Asia and Europe. By the mid-1970’s we were operating adventurous trips along the Trans Siberian Railway, one of the first tour companies ever to do so. Through the 1990’s we developed a more extensive choice of escorted journeys and independent rail itineraries through Mongolia and Siberia and launched our first Silk Route Railway journeys.  In 1997 we further expanded our tour operations with new trekking and overland tours in the little visited region of Central Asia. During this period we also entered international markets for the first time and now Sundowners journeys are available in over 20 countries through a network of travel agents. In 2003 we entered another exciting period as we expanded the destinations covered and introduced our youth and student product – Vodkatrain.
www.sundownerstravel.com         www.vodkatrain.com

Sundowners is constantly developing and investigating new routes and itineraries, and today operate trips in:
Russia                China                 Mongolia                Turkey                 Uzbekistan        Kazakstan
India                Pakistan         Iran                 Kyrgyzstan         Tajikistan         Turkmenistan
Georgia                Armenia                Azerbaijan

Sundowners is recognised as the leading specialist on travel to these unique destinations, and as awareness of the regions grows we are poised for some substantial growth over the next 10 years.

Tours & Travellers
Sundowners is a small but growing niche operator offering quality and value. We seek out travel to unusual and special destinations. Trips range from inclusive ‘Premium’ style to adventurous ‘Small Group Journeys’. The format of our operation varies from rail and hotel journeys, to trips involving local transport, trekking and camping. In addition to Independent Adventures and our fully escorted Sundowners groups, we offer ‘Vodkatrain’, a budget orientated youth and student product that combines the best of independent and group travel. The maximum group size for any Sundowners trip is 15 travellers plus the Leader. Leaders are a mixture of Group Leaders (who travel across borders and accompany our longer, more adventurous journeys), National Leaders (who are nationals of the country they lead in and fluent in English) and ‘Honchos’ (young, fun city-based locals who look after our Vodkatrain clients).

Our clients are of all ages and come from a variety of countries and backgrounds. Many of our clients are experienced travellers who expect very high levels of service and Group Leader knowledge. Sundowners has a high percentage of travellers returning to join other trips.

Group Leaders
Like our group travellers, Group Leaders come from a broad range of backgrounds. Most have extensive travel experience. Some have travelled with Sundowners as group members. Present leaders are aged between 20 – 45 years, but there is no specific age limit. However, excellent health, stamina and flexibility are paramount. Sundowners employ Group Leaders to work with Sundowners Small Group Journeys only. Our Vodkatrain trips are staffed by young local Honchos who live in our destination cities, and Group Leaders will not be working with these groups.
Employment period
Sundowners Group Leaders are employed full-time, but on a seasonal basis. Group Leaders are on duty 24 hours a day. The exact start and finish dates may vary each year depending on booking and demand. In general the season commences in March and concludes in October/November.

First year group leaders can generally expect to be employed from approximately March until October however, occasionally we offer positions starting mid way through the season. During the ‘off season’, some group leaders may have the opportunity to participate in promotional work or other activities in Australia or overseas. Sundowners cannot guarantee ‘off season’ employment and Group Leaders should consider how they would otherwise be occupied during that period.
Employment Commitment
Sundowners require a commitment to two operating seasons (eg March/April – Sept/Oct in 2007 and March/April – Sept/Oct in 2008, an overall period of approx 14 months.

Employment Bond
New Group Leader are required to provide an up front payment of $1500.00 to cover your initial training trip and associated visa and administration costs. Payment is to be by cheque, money order or direct deposit. This money is held by Sundowners on satisfactory completion of your second season. Group Leader performance is monitored through client questionnaires and letters from Sundowners travellers, and constant evaluation by Sundowners Operations.
Location Costs
New Group Leaders will also need to pay AUD$1000 towards flights to join their training trip. This will be refunded on satisfactory completion of their first season.
In total:  AU$2500 is  required upon acceptance of a Group Leader position.

Take note – Group leading is not all fun!

The rewards of group leading are many. These include the satisfaction of running a successful and happy trip, travelling and learning of new and exciting places, new friends, leading a different lifestyle,  freedom, autonomy and responsibility not found in other occupations. However, the role is mentally and physically very demanding. Consider the following before you apply:

        Remember that the group is on holiday - you are not.
        You may lead the same trip several times over in a season. You must maintain your enthusiasm and interest for each trip.
        You will work long hours, often the first up and the last to bed. Trips are often scheduled to start and finish only a day or so apart. Do you have the stamina to cope with the lifestyle?
        You will be in continual close proximity to people, most you will enjoy, but some you may not. Some people may be difficult, take a dislike to other members of the group, or to you personally.
        You may feel lonely, isolated and homesick during the season. Be prepared to be out of touch with friends and family. Personal relationships can be difficult to maintain. Communication is often expensive and unreliable.
        You or a group member may become ill. Hygiene and medical services are not of the same standards as in Australia.
        You will likely be back home for about 5 months between seasons. What will you do?
        On your return from overseas you may feel unsettled and restless. Returning to a ‘normal’ job may be difficult.
        Whilst all reasonable expenses are covered and you are paid a regular salary, group leading is not a highly paid occupation!
