Loudness is the key
First and foremost, your sounds for silence CD should be played loudly.
How Loud? Somewhat louder than your baby is crying. This is safe, as your baby's hearing can tolerate the volume of its own crying. This threshold volume will be both safe and effective for your baby. While your newborn's hearing is delicate, silence is not what your baby is used to! Your baby is more likely to respond to sounds for silence being played loudly, especially during a particularly unsettled period. Yes on very high volume to begin with. Some babies need to be stunned (but not frightened) into being distracted away from their distress. You can then slowly turn the volume down as your baby settles. However, for initial settling, the sounds should be used loudly. This will gain your baby's attention and help them to engage and settle.
Choose one soundtrack and play on repeat
Different babies respond to different soundtracks at different times. There will be one or more soundtracks that work for your baby and you may need to experiment to find which one is best. Most unsettled babies respond extremely well to the Environmental Sounds and/or White Noise.
Once you have identified which track works best for your baby, use this consistently so that your baby becomes familiar with it.
Play your baby's preferred track/s on repeat
If the white noise track, or one environmental soundscape in particular best comforts your baby, you should play that track on repeat.
