UK tourist gets $900 stimulus bonus
May 09, 2009 11:30pm Article from: Sunday Mail
UK tourist Alex Mote is a fan of Harold Bishop, kangaroos and Tim Tams - and now "K. Rudd" also ranks highly on her list.
The 26-year-old was stunned and delighted to be "stimulated" by a $900 bonus payment in the post on Friday - as she lives in England.
She admits to feeling slightly guilty at receiving the cheque, as ultimately the money will do nothing for the Australian economy.
But she is eligible as she lodged a tax return last financial year after spending 11 months on a working holiday Down Under.
"I must say K. Rudd would have to be my favourite Australian now - after Harold on Neighbours of course," she joked. "I feel a bit guilty, it's a little weird.
"I told some friends and they can't believe it, they weren't having a go but they said it was a bit ridiculous.
"I think it was just good timing really. I already had a high opinion of Australia and this was just a bonus . . . so to speak."
The English resident, who returned home last August, is among tens of thousands of foreigners and expats whose bank accounts have become plumper since the first bonus payments began rolling out in December.
The Australian Taxation Office said in a statement foreign nationals and non-residents were eligible to receive the tax bonus payment if they were living in Australia, and filed a tax return last financial year.
But the office had no figures on how many foreigners, such as backpackers who worked here temporarily, would receive the payment.
"Bonus payments are only made to people resident for tax purposes in 2007-2008," the statement said.
"We will not have information on who has become subsequently non-resident unless they need to and lodge a 2008-2009 tax return."
For Alex, a teacher, her guilt is somewhat assuaged by a return visit this year to Geelong, Victoria, where she had worked and lived.
The Federal Opposition has been critical of the administration of the economic rescue package, including the fact jailed criminals were also benefiting if they worked on the outside in the 2007-08 tax year.
About $75 million of stimulus cash paid last December went to 60,000 overseas-based pensioners.
Alex said her cheque was going straight into her English savings account, amounting to about pound stg. 430 after bank fees.
"I would like to sincerely thank Kevin Rudd, and I'll definitely be back," she said.
