The reasons the ABS gives for this, like saying it’s been a custom since 1991 and that it helps collect detailed data—just don't make sense and feel very unfair to one of Australia’s biggest migrant communities.First, saying it is a "1991 custom" is just a lazy excuse. The Census is supposed to change with the times. For the 2026 Census, you have already changed and updated questions about gender, sexual orientation, and ancestry. If you can update those parts for modern society, you can’t just hide behind a 35-year-old old habit to leave out a major group of people. "We have always done it this way" is a terrible reason.Second, this completely contradicts your own rule. The form says: "The countries listed were the most commonly reported countries of birth in the 2021 Census." But according to your own 2021 data, China was the third most common overseas country of birth. It has way more people than many other countries that actually got a tick-box on the form. Listing smaller countries but leaving China out makes no sense and goes against your own words.Third, if you want detailed data, there is a very easy solution. You say leaving China out forces people to specify if they are from the Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau, or Taiwan. If that’s true, why not just add a tick-box for "China (PRC)" alongside the others? Making hundreds of thousands of people tick "Other" and manually write "China" isn't improving data quality. It just feels like you are trying to make our community invisible.Please fix this. If the Census is supposed to show an accurate picture of Australia, you need to stop ignoring one of the largest demographic groups because of an outdated rule. |
