5. How have other languages and culture from other countries influenced your native language?
Well, that’s a tricky question and I recommend you go find a language expert on this. As for my personal experience, I didn’t recall much intertwine between my native language and foreign languages, which is a lucky thing as I didn’t get confused. Whereas I did hear stories from friends who are bilingual in Dutch and English complaining about one interfering with another.
6. Do you think it will be good if there is an international language in the world, such as english?
I hope that’s not the case. It will take all the fun out of this world. I see language not only as a tool for expressing ideas, but also having a profound impact in the way we see things. I always feel like when I’m speaking in English, I take on a whole new way personality compared to when I’m conversing in Mandarin. When speaking English I feel more bouncy, lively, and free with how I see things, but when speaking Mandarin I feel more emotional and melodramatic, and feel more at home.
7. The French believe that their language should be 'pure', which is to be free of any other influence... What's your opinion on that?
Well I can see where they come from. This belief has to come from people who are very proud of their language and culture, and that’s a good thing. But on the other hand, they are also taking on the risk of looking arrogant to people from other culture. If I’m going to Paris tomorrow and I was told “you need to learn pure French before you go”, next minute I’m just gonna cancel my flight. And if you think about why we as human beings talk, why we talk in languages instead of barking at each other? It’s because we generate ideas in our brain and it’s part of human nature to exchange ideas. And language is such a tool for doing that. It’s just that simple, no matter where you come from, a noble French upper-class, or a grass root family, we all have this fundamental nature of knowing what other people are thinking and comparing our mental notes with them. And if you can get to that level of understanding, all those talks about “pure accent”, “pure language” etc. become quite laughable.
8. Do you agree that language is a very important aspect of the cultural identification?
I think cultural identification involves many aspects. An intuitive example would be if I talk to another person in his native tongue, he would immediately relate to me without doubt, and I call that “cultural identification”. Another example, say if we are all native English speakers, and if I use all those funky teenager language in my daily conversations, surely I’ll be able to attract a large group of teenager friends, but may at the same time got a blank look from the adult world. That’s an example of me identifying with the teenager culture through the use of a particular sub-branch of a language.
