HOW TO TAKE CUTTINGS FROM GERANIUMS
Using a sharp, sterilized blade make a cut about four or five inches down from one of the growing tips of the plant, just below a leaf joint. Remove all of the leaves on the plant cutting with the exception of the top three to five leaves. If the cutting has any flower heads on it these should be removed so that the cutting can direct all of its energy into rooting.
At this point you can leave the cuttings to air for 3-7 days so that the cut stems can callous before planting or plant your cuttings straight away.
Insert the cuttings individually into 2½ inch pots containing equal parts (by volume) of moss peat and horticultural sand. Alternatively, use a good quality compost such as John Innes 'Seed and Cutting' but you may wish to mix in 25 % by volume of horticultural grit, perlite or vermiculite.
Place your potted cuttings onto either a warm windowsill or preferably a well ventilated greenhouse bench.
Now this is an old plantsman trick, cover the cuttings with a layer of newspaper for 7-10 days. This helps to keep the cuttings humid, but will also soak up any excess moisture that could encourage fungal infections while the cuttings take root.
Allow the cuttings to dry out between watering, but make sure that the soil is never waterlogged. The cuttings should root in about 10 to 20 days.
When the cuttings reach a height of about 6 inches you can pinch out the tips to promote bushiness, and as soon as the root system has established you can transfer the geranium cuttings into 3-4 inch pots using a standard potting compost. Alternatively you can plant you geraniums outside. Just so long as the weather is suitable.
