IF you think Sydney's traffic is bad now, you ain't seen nothing yet.
Frustrated drivers can expect even more peak-hour delays in coming weeks, with the congestion of what the industry calls "Mad March" fast approaching.
Traffic experts said next month was Sydney's worst for congestion.
And the delays are expected to be made even worse by the removal of the M4 toll from today, with a huge jump in traffic expected along the 40km route.
The toll removal is expected to hurt traffic with drivers slowed to 40km/h as the RTA re-configures the lanes over the next three weeks.
"March is one of the busiest months for traffic congestion because drivers are in the habit of leaving at a later time because of light traffic over summer," the NRMA's Peter Khoury said.
"The traffic volumes increase considerably because finally everyone is back from holidays - and that includes university, college and school students.
"It is that period of adjustment back to peak hour that makes March so much worse than any other month."
Clinical and organisational psychologist Dr Darryl Cross, who helps people reduce their stress levels, said congestion can cause long-term health issues such as high blood pressure if not managed correctly. "It is getting worse in Sydney," Dr Cross said yesterday. "It takes up a considerable amount of time and energy to plan before people leave in the morning and then they get in their car or get to the train and it can be exhausting."
The last toll was paid on the M4 just before midnight last night, when the motorway reverted to state control.
Each week day about 110,000 motorists use the M4 which stretches from Concord, in Sydney's west to Lapstone at the foot of the Blue Mountains.
Nostalgic M4 toll booth operators said they had formed friendships with drivers and had received farewell gifts yesterday.
"It's sad but we've had a good day saying goodbye to everyone," Joyce Robinson said. "We've been handed bottles of wine, chocolates and even business cards with job offers." |
