The Swiss Army Knife of video players is now on Apple’s iPad.

The iPad is a great mobile video player with one big catch - you need to convert all your video to iGadget-friendly formats such as m4v or mp4. It’s not that hard using great tools such as Handbrake, but it’s still a time-consuming pain.

Forget batch conversations and other hassles - the VLC Media Player has come to the rescue. Unlike the iPad’s limited format support, VLC for the iPad is a one-stop media player app - handling just about anything you can throw at it. At least in theory.

Once VLC is installed, you can use iTunes to sync across compatible video clips to your iPad. Go to the iPad’s Apps tab in iTunes, below file-sharing select VLC and then add files from your computer. I copied across an XviD file and it played perfectly, so I decided to throw the DivXTestCDV2.0 at it - including MPEG1/2/4, DivX, XviD, MKV, OGM and Windows Media Video files.

Despite the promising start, the test didn’t exactly go according to plan. When the VLC app launches it attempts to generate a thumbnail for each file, but if the app encounters a file it doesn’t like it crashes after a few seconds. After a little trial and error I discovered that the .AVI, .MP4 and .MKV container files were the problem so I deleted them. With the crashes out of the way, the VLC app still refused to recognise the .DIVX, .OGM and .WMV container files. As for video codecs, it refused to see MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and WMV files. That just left DivX 3.1/4/5/6 and XviD (avi) and H.264 (mp4) files. They played very smoothly, with excellent sound and picture quality, plus I like the fact the app remembers where you left off when you open a previously played file.

The VLC app labels 720p and 1080p files as HD - try to play one and you’re warned “Your iPad is probably too slow to play this movie correctly”. Proceed anyway and you’ll encounter either jerky video or a crash.

Of course Your Mileage May Vary and I’ve read mixed reports in app’s iTunes store comments. Some people have had luck playing Windows Media Video files, while others can play MKV and OGM containers by renaming them .AVI (a trick which works for me).

So what’s the verdict? Considering it’s version 1.0, and a free app, it’s hard to complain about the VLC iPad app. Even so, if you’re expecting the versatility and stability of the desktop app, you’re in for disappointment. Around the house you might still be better off using Air Video or Orb to transcode various video formats on the fly and stream them to your iPad. The VLC app is certainly one to keep an eye on and lets hope it comes to the iPhone as well as the iPad.
