Billboards promote road safety

A new road safety campaign by the City of Sydney will highlight the number of accidents occurring in the city’s most dangerous areas in a bid to improve safety for pedestrians and drivers.
Maps of accident hotspots and the number of pedestrians killed or injured around major train stations will appear on eye-catching green billboards during the month-long safety drive.
Six billboards on platforms at Town Hall (3), Central (2) and Wynyard (1) and 50 more on the back of buses will remind commuters and drivers to watch out for each other.
The Watch Out Pedestrians About and Watch Out Cars About campaigns are a joint project between the City of Sydney and Roads and Maritime Services’ Centre for Road Safety.
“Sydney is a fast-paced city, but safety should always be our first priority. It’s not worth risking your life or someone else’s to get to your destination a few seconds faster,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.
Accident rates involving pedestrians in Sydney are falling, but the City is continuing to work with Roads and Maritime Services to make Sydney’s streets as safe as possible for everyone.
Roads and Maritimes Services statistics released late last year show the number of accidents involving pedestrians and vehicles in the city has fallen by 12.4 per cent since 2009.
The figures also show young men are far more likely to be hit by a vehicle in the city, except for the 26-29 age group, where women are slightly more at risk.
City of Sydney Road Safety Officer Peter Wright called for drivers to keep a low, even speed when driving in the city and reminded road users of the impact even a low-speed collision can have.
“Imagine being hit by an entire rugby team running at their regular training pace,” Mr Wright said. “That’s the impact a pedestrian experiences when hit by a family sedan moving at just 10 kilometres an hour.
“Driving at a slow but consistent speed is safer than stopping abruptly and taking off quickly from traffic lights, and your journey will often be quicker and less stressful.”
The third, annual Watch Out Pedestrians About and Watch Out Cars About campaign will run from today, 20 April, to 17 May.
