What is becoming clear is that: The outage is due to a power struggle between two parties — John Russell (CEO, currently residing overseas), and a group in Australia including general manager Kevin Slack and director Harley Bradstreet. Both parties have acted to thwart the other, including the shutdown of the Veridas network and freezing of bank accounts. Russell is attempting to sell Veridas to a third party in order to restore service, but is having trouble due to the uncertaintly over who actually controls the company. A large outstanding debt to Telstra is involved and may have triggered the whole mess. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ISP wholesaler Veridas has been off the air since lunchtime Wednesday, with upwards of 30,000 dial-up and broadband customers left without service. Despite early reports of DNS problems, the actual cause seems to be much more serious, with the Veridas national network effectively ceasing to exist from the perspective of other networks. Whirlpool has received information that suggests the outage is the result of a rift between an overseas John Russell (Veridas CEO), and management "on the ground" in Australia, led by Kevin Slack. Whether the outage is a result of an upstream provider or as a result of changes made inside the Veridas network is not clear. Russell apologised to customers on Wednesday. "I sincerely regret the inconvenience caused to the Veridas customers and to the customers of the ISPs who utilize the Veridas network", he said. Russell told Whirlpool on Wednesday he expected most services to be restored "between midday and early afternoon" that day, but the Veridas network is still dead today. Some ISPs that are customers of Veridas are now looking for a way out, with Veridas management not contactable since Wednesday. |
