展览前夕 悉尼“聪明的收藏家”重生了

Sydney's 'clever collector' reborn on eve of exhibition

According to the rumour mill, Andrew Lloyd Webber was seen sizing up Solomon Joseph Solomon's massive painting Birth of Eve when it was sold at auction in London in December.
Apparently, the mega-rich composer (also the world's most famous collector of late Victorian British paintings) felt he didn't have a room large enough to hang it.
Installers at the Art Gallery of NSW understand the problem. More than three metres tall, Solomon's masterpiece is too large to hang alongside the other 40-odd paintings, watercolours, drawings and sculptures owned by the Sydney businessman John Schaeffer that form the gallery's new exhibition, Victorian Visions.
"We can't fit it into a modern gallery space," explained its curator, Richard Beresford. "This one has to be hung in the grand old 1890s building, which was built for grand pictures like this."
Schaeffer paid L713,250 ($1.16 million) for the painting at Christie's, marking his high-profile return to the international art market.
Much has happened to the man who made his fortune from corporate cleaning since his first Pre-Raphaelite collection was exhibited at the gallery in 2003. Since then, margin calls and a costly divorce have forced him to sell two of Sydney's most famous eastern suburbs homes, Boomerang and Rona. Most of his epic paintings by 19th-century masters such as Lord Leighton and Ford Madox Ford sold for an estimated $20 million. Yet over the past five years he has quietly built a second great collection. Is this one as good?
"There were some outrageously important paintings in his previous collection," Beresford says. "But with this painting by [Solomon], he's coming back to the same sort of level. He's a very clever collector."
Solomon was well-known in his day (1860-1927) for what Beresford calls "his big, dramatic, rhetorical, histrionic subjects which look like French salon paintings because he studied in Paris". This "sensuous" painting shows the moment of Eve's biblical birth from Adam's rib, with two angels as the midwives.
But since the artist died and his widow bequeathed it to the London suburb of Ealing, it has never been seen in its full glory. Schaeffer has had it cleaned and restored, revealing colours and depths.
The exhibition runs from May 20 to August 29.
