Arsonists hit store

POLICE are on the hunt for an arsonist who set fire inside a Kingsway shop last week, causing more than $500,000 in damages along the busy strip.
Employees at the Best Asian Food grocery store were startled when they smelled smoke coming from one of the aisles about 8.30pm on August 25.
They spent the next 15 minutes searching for the fire before one of the store’s products, smouldering from being deliberately lit, burst into flames.
Manager Michael Tan, who was still in shock when the Leader spoke to him, said: “We tried to use fire extinguishers, but after a while we just had to get out”.
Glen Waverley Det-Sen-Constable Peter Dallen-Jones said the blaze, which destroyed about $300,000 in stock, started on a shelf.
“There has been substantial smoke damage to shops along the strip and the combined estimated loss is about half a million dollars,” Det-Sen-Constable Dallen-Jones said.
Stella Menere, owner of clothing store Boy O Boy two doors down from Best Asian Food said more than $100,000 of her stock had been damaged by smoke.
“I’m absolutely gutted, to build up a business from scratch two years ago it’s completely shattering I could lose everything,” Ms Menere said.
A number of venues at Century City Walk, including a movie theatre and restaurants, were evacuated.
Police are looking to speak with a Filipino family who were in the store on the night and are appealing for any witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Glen Waverley CIU on 9566 1531. |
