Endeavour Hills school cancels swimming carnival because students can't swim
A MELBOURNE high school has defended a decision to cancel its annual swimming carnival, saying the majority of its students can't swim.
Endeavour Hills Secondary College made the decision because the event was costly and "becoming a bit of a farce", principal Barbara Mothersdale said.
She said a large population of students at the school were former refugees or migrants from poor countries who had never learnt to swim.
"The [carnival] numbers have been decreasing rapidly," she said.
"They were loving running and jumping in the water, but we were finding we could only provide novelty events," she said.
Many of the students could not afford the cost of participating in the carnival, she said.
Instead, Ms Mothersdale said the school will run swimming lessons for Year 7s in January at a cost of $7 per student.
"Given the number of international students who drown over the summer, we've tried to address that," she said.

"Most of our parents are very supportive of the program."
