FLIGHT attendants have warned that safety standards will suffer because of a move to reduce the number of cabin crew on Australian aircraft.
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority is moving to change the ratio of flight attendants to passengers from one to 36 to one to 50 for planes that can seat between 36 and 216, reports The Australian.
Airlines have been pushing for the change for several years, arguing it brings the rules into line with manufacturer guidelines and international practice. But unions have opposed the move, saying it sacrifices higher safety levels for airline profits.
"In an emergency situation - by definition - in our view it would mean that passengers are placed at a greater risk," Flight Attendants Association of Australia international division secretary, Michael Mijatov, said.
