Number plate worth five sportscars
October 03, 2007 07:56am Article from: The Daily Telegraph
THE exotic machinery at Sydney's motor show this year will be outshone by a humble number plate.
This 92-year-old NSW No.6 plate is expected to fetch between $1 million and $1.5 at this year's Shannon's auction on the last day of the Australian International Motor Show.
That would buy you five brand new Italian Supercars like the $300,000 Maserati GranTurismo, which made its first Australian appearance yesterday at Darling Harbour.
Shannons spokesman Damien Duigan yesterday said there had already been interest in the number plate.
"We've spoken to a number of collectors who are interested in bidding - some are selling other plates so they can bid on this," he said.
If it does sell within the expected price range it would set a new record for a plate sold at public auction.
Mr Duigan said it was not often single digit plates became available because they often remained in families for a long period of time.
The number plate, issued to the Tramways Department in 1915, has been in the same family for the past 20 years.
"The lower the digit the better. Number 1 is the most desirable," he said.
While number plate collectors may be getting excited, others prefer something they can drive, with more than 100 Australian orders taken for the Maserati GranTurismo.
The Maserati will share the spotlight with exotic stunners like the Lamborghini Superleggera, the Ferrari Scuderia and the Maybach 57S Limousine, worth just over $1 million.
The Australian International Motor Show starts next Thursday, with the auction held on October 21. |
