Freeway noise is a ‘Mind-mumbing roar’

FAMILIES are being driven insane by the deafening racket from the Monash Freeway.
Wheelers Hill resident Jack Drajkopyl said the never-ending noise outside his home could easily be solved if the State Government spent $2 million improving sound barriers on the freeway between Springvale Rd and Wellington Rd.
Mr Drajkopyl said he had had enough of the ``constant and mind-numbing roar'' of up to 160,000 cars every day, which registered upwards of 60dB at all hours, even on still days.
"This terrible, droning noise is having a massive impact on my personal life,'' Mr Drajkopyl said. "You can't entertain friends, as the garden is too noisy, you can't read a book because you can't concentrate, you can't sleep at night, and as for relaxing in summer, no way it would be complete madness.''
VicRoads' readings from outside a Brandon Park Drive house and taken two years ago reached 71.9dB.
The CSIRO says noise levels of 70dB would be equivalent to “trying to sleep 3m from an operating vacuum cleaner''.
