Teenage Sydney snake bite victim dies
January 14, 2007 - 12:04PM
A teenager bitten by one of the world's most venomous snakes has died in a Sydney hospital with his family at his bedside.
The 16-year-old stumbled from bushland into the middle of a suburban cricket game and collapsed after being bitten on the hand by an eastern brown snake.
Doctors at Westmead Hospital worked through the night to save the boy, with his parents by his bedside.
But his family issued a statement saying: "Our son has died tragically (on Sunday) after being bitten by a snake (Saturday). We ask that our privacy be respected at this time".
The eastern brown is common on Australia's east coast and considered one of the world's most dangerous reptiles. It is fast-moving and can be aggressive if frightened or feels threatened.
Once widespread in the Sydney region, the snake grows to two metres long.
It's believed the boy's trek for help with a mate, in hot conditions, may have advanced the spread of the snake's deadly venom through his body.
The boy emerged from the bush reserve at Whalan, in Sydney's west, about midday (AEDT) and collapsed unconscious, suffering a heart attack on the cricket field.
