Tax break for school expenses
September 25, 2008 11:02am Article from: AAP
PARENTS have been advised to start keeping their children's school expense receipts so that they can cash in on a new tax break.
Treasurer Wayne Swan today introduced a bill to set up an education tax refund which, he said, would help about 1.3 million families with 2.7 million children at school.
Mr Swan said the scheme, which would cost about $4.4 billion over four years, was a key part of the Government's education revolution.
"It will help families invest in their children's education - at the same time that the Government is investing in a better education system,'' he said.
The plan will cover all parents with children at school who are entitled to Family Tax Benefit Part A.
They will be able to claim 50 per cent of eligible education expenses up to $750 a year for each child at primary school and up to $1,500 for secondary school students.
Computers, printers, paper, education software, text books and trade tools will be covered. So will the cost of setting up and maintaining a home internet connection.
Mr Swan said the tax offset would apply to expenses incurred from July 1 this year and could be claimed in 2008-09 tax returns.
Debate on the Tax Laws Amendment (Education Refund) Bill 2008 was adjourned.
