Combined Speed and Red-Light Camera Systems
Combined speed and red-light camera systems comprise a camera, a flash and in-road sensors. Combined speed and red-light camera systems monitor multiple lanes at selected intersections and roads for both speed and red-light offences.
How they work
Combined speed and red-light camera systems use in-road sensors placed a fixed distance apart and measure the time it takes a vehicle to pass over the sensors. The time it takes a vehicle to pass over the sensors is then used to calculate the speed.
If the speed of a vehicle exceeds the displayed speed limit, an infringement notice is issued. The system is able to differentiate between lanes so only an offending vehicle will be infringed.
Red-light infringements are recorded by in-road sensors. There are two sensors which detect the passage of the vehicle past the white stop line at traffic lights. Both sensors must be crossed on when the light is red to activate the system. If this occurs, an infringement notice is issued.
Fixed Digital Safety Cameras
Newly installed fixed speed cameras are digital. This means that instead of using film like a normal 35mm camera, they take digital images. So as soon as an offence is captured, it is transmitted electronically back to computers at Victoria Police’s Traffic Camera Office.
Fixed digital safety cameras are permanently located on selected intersections and roads. Fixed digital safety cameras can detect speeding, red-light running, or both.
There are three types of fixed digital safety cameras, including:
combined speed, red light cameras
speed cameras
point-to-point cameras.
