A YEAR after the introduction of the new Melbourne model, the number of Victorian year 12 students who put Melbourne University first on their list of tertiary preferences has slumped.

First-preference data from the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre reveals that 9874 year 12 students, or 16 per cent of all university applicants, selected Melbourne University as their first preference this year, down from 19 per cent in 2008.

The data also shows that the number of students wanting to study at Monash University, Melbourne's cross-town competitor, has increased. Last year 12,186 students — or 20 per cent of all applications — put Monash as their first preference. This year it rose to 12,959, or 21 per cent.

The number of first-preference applications to Deakin University, RMIT and Australian Catholic University rose while La Trobe, Swinburne, University of Ballarat and Victoria University remained steady.

In its US-style curriculum revamp last year, Melbourne University abolished 96 undergraduate degrees and replaced them with six broad options: arts, science, commerce, environments, music and biomedicine. Students can specialise in subjects like law and medicine at graduate level.

The university said the first-preference figures for 2009 were skewed because courses such as undergraduate medicine were not offered under the new model. Melbourne University acting vice-chancellor Professor Peter McPhee said he was pleased that the university's first preferences for Commonwealth-supported places had increased.

"Melbourne arts, science and commerce (courses) are three of the four most sought-after courses in Victoria or even Australia," he said.

"We are particularly pleased with the strong demand for arts and science and our biomedicine course has a 46 per cent increase on 2008."

Melbourne University Student Union president Carla Drakeford said current students had mixed feelings about the model and year 12s were taking this into account when making their preferences.

Deakin University's acting vice-chancellor, John Rosenberg, said there had been a strong rise in applications for undergraduate courses such as engineering.

"There is no doubt there are some students who see an advantage in immediately entering an undergraduate degree that will give them a job at the end of it," he said.

But he said it was good that year 12 students had the choice of a US-style curriculum.

Professor Adam Shoemaker, Monash's acting vice-chancellor, said increased interest in courses at Monash reflected the introduction of the Monash "passport" last October — whereby the university cut some courses, placed greater emphasis on double degrees and will send more students to overseas campuses.

He said the university was strongly interested in flexible and double degrees, especially in social science, humanities, science, business and law.

First-preference applications closed in late December and there were 62,427 applications through VTAC, up from 61,024 in 2008.
