Five face court over Melbourne ATM scam

The amount of money stolen through recent ATM scams operating in Melbourne has grown to about $1 million, police say.

Five men today faced court accused of running a scam involving an ANZ automatic teller on Elizabeth Street that allegedly fleeced customers of at least $500,000.

The Romanian men who were arrested last night over the skimming scam were this afternoon remanded in custody to face the Melbourne Magistrates Court again on June 18.

Nicolae Mateica, 33, Aurelian Ion Stancu, 34, Marian Fieraru, 24, Dorel Musat, 23, and Ionut Nedea, 26, are charged with obtaining property by deception.

The men allegedly used fraudulent bank cards produced by a skimming machine to withdraw money from ANZ customers' accounts.

Nedea has also been charged with possessing a machine for making a false document.

All of the men are Romanian citizens and none applied for bail.

Magistrate Jon Klestadt said the Romanian consulate should be notified the men were in custody.

Police this week revealed a sophisticated skimming device had been placed on the Elizabeth Street teller.

The device allegedly recorded details from swiped cards while a small camera filmed customers entering their personal identification numbers.

According to court documents, the men stole the money between March 15 and March 25.

Only three of the five men have been interviewed by police over the allegations due to a lack of Romanian translators, the court heard.

Police are investigating any links between the city swindle and another device that fell off a Commonwealth Bank ATM at Patterson Lakes Shopping Centre in Chelsea on Tuesday.

Outside court, police said about a million dollars had been stolen through ATM schemes and the figure was expected to rise.

The Commonwealth Bank has told The Age four of its ATMs have been tampered with recently while the ANZ has had to cancel 2000 customers' cards and so far has repaid customers $300,000.

中国的atm机都装的。如果有人在atm机上搞鬼，只要及时察看机是录像就可以发现了吧。

记得上周出了这事后，电视里和报纸上不都出现了要求认识录像中犯罪嫌疑人的人民群众提供相关信息的吗！

Bayside ATM skimmer 'may be linked to global ring'

Melbourne has been hit by a series of ATM scams.

Victorian police fear a sophisticated skimming device found attached to an ATM of a Bendigo Bank in south-east Melbourne could have been planted by an international gang targeting Australia.

Last month, five Romanian men were charged with the theft of almost $1 million from up to 5,000 cardholders' accounts using a skimming device attached to an ATM in central Melbourne.

"All police forces in Australia and the Australian Federal Police are looking at it,'' said Detective Sergeant Rodney Mills from the Crime Investigation Unit.

"There's the possibility that it could be an international gang.''

The device uncovered at the Bendigo Bank ATM at Station Street, Sandringham, at 12.30pm  on Sunday had a camera hidden behind its facade which recorded the PIN (personal identification number) tapped in by customers.

A card reader capable of scanning and storing information contained on the magnetic strip of cards had been inserted into the machine, police said.

A plastic strip had also been attached to the top of the screen, fitted with a small video recorder and a pin-sized hole to record users typing in PINs.

The find follows a series of other ATM scamming incidents in the Melbourne CBD discovered last month.

Police are asking people to be on the lookout for any changes in the appearance of machines, and to use their hand to cover the key pad.

ATM users should be aware that most machines have a flashing light near the card reader, police said.

A machine fitted with a skimming device is unlikely to have a flashing light.

Sandringham police are investigating.

最好近段时间只用cash out取款。

Police have released images of six men they believe can help with their investigation into the planting of automatic teller machine (ATM) skimming devices across Melbourne.

Detectives are investigating possible links to a European fraud syndicate known to be operating throughout Australia.

Eight ATMs around Melbourne have had skimming devices attached since February: in the city's Queen Street, Bundoora, Mornington, Windsor, Patterson Lakes, Airport West, St Kilda and Sandringham.

Police today asked for public help to find the six men. The appeal follows the recent arrest of five Romanian men allegedly responsible for a skimming device on an ANZ machine in the city.

Yesterday, police said a skimming device and camera were attached to the Sandringham Bendigo Bank machine on Saturday. On Sunday, a bank employee noticed the machine's card slot looked unusual and informed police.

Today, The Age revealed that experts warned six years ago Australia should upgrade its card technology from magnetic strip to microchip to prevent the nation being targetted by card fraudsters.

Anyone with information about these men should phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of card skimming should contact their bank.

A TIP-OFF yesterday led police to a highly sophisticated skimming device attached to a busy ATM in the CBD.

On the same day The Daily Telegraph revealed eastern European crime syndicates were flocking to Australia on "stealing holidays" officers discovered the gadget fitted to a St George Bank ATM at the intersection of Park and Castlereagh Sts at 3pm.

Detective Superintendent Peter Houlahan said police from the Strike Force Mail was investigating the device. "Forensics are examining the ATM. From what we have seen, it is quite a sophisticated device," he said.

Banks and police urged people to be extra vigilant when withdrawing cash.

Superintendent Col Dyson said ATM users could stump high-tech recording devices simply by covering their pin number with a newspaper or their palm as they punched in the code.

"People can examine ATM's for skimming devices but some of them are hard to detect because they are made to fit the particular model of ATM," Supt Dyson said.

"I would advise people to look for the device at the ATM but I would not rely on that alone. It's better to protect your pin.

"Without the pin number, there is nothing the crooks can get. Protect your pin from above with your hand or whatever you have around, like a newspaper."

你理解错了，我指的不是抓人而是通过查看监控录像就可以发现机器有没人被人动手脚。
我想在atm机上改装不可能几秒钟就搞好的吧，如果有专人每天定时检查一下监控录像只要快进也能看出来的。
这样就能及时把被动过手脚的机器恢复。
这还是可行的吧？我看电影里监控室的保安一人要看10几个屏幕呢。

墨尔本地方法院今天对一罗马尼亚籍人关于在ATM机上安装密码盗窃设备进行审判。该男子对六项罪名供认不讳，因此被判监禁半年。

法院获悉此人伙同他人从网上购得密码盗窃设备，随后在悉尼市中心的一银行下手，先后从他人账户中非法转走1.6万元。

不过警方并没有怀疑他是国际犯罪集团的一分子。

A ROMANIAN national has been sentenced to six months jail for an ATM skimming scam.

Ioan Selesi, 33, pleaded guilty at Melbourne Magistrates Court today to six charges relating to an ATM scam that stole almost $20,000 from card holders.

The court heard Selesi, who arrived in Australia late last year, last month bought a magnetic strip data collector over the internet with an accomplice.

Selesi attached the data collector to the security door of a bank in George Street, in Sydney's CBD, the court was told.

He then transferred the magnetic strip data collected by the device onto blank gift cards and withdrew $16,000 from bank accounts.

On April 28, Selesi arrived in Melbourne with the financial data and fake cards and withdrew $3000.

Melbourne detectives arrested Selesi last Friday at his hotel room and obtained a magnetic strip collector card reader, a laptop with financial data on it, $2500 cash and 10 fraudulent cards.

Magistrate Dan Muling ordered the forfeiture of all items seized by police.

The defence said the offences were sophisticated but no cameras were installed.

Police have not alleged Selesi is part of an international scamming ring.

Selesi pleaded guilty to six charges including dishonestly obtaining personal financial information, possessing a bank card reading device to make a false document and dealing with proceeds of crime.

Mr Muling sentenced Selesi to two months for importing the device and four months for the other offences. The court heard his application for citizenship may be jeopardised because of his court appearance.
