A ONE-stop-shop website for parents of young children will provide greater transparency of the childcare sector, the Federal Government says.
The website - mychild.gov.au - provides parents with information about health, education and government benefits, such as the 50 per cent childcare rebate.
It also provides details of childcare centres and providers, their facilities, services and fees.
Education Minister Julia Gillard says the website will make it easier for parents to compare services in their area.
"One of the problems for parents has been that there has been no way to check fee arrangements in a way that's comparable,'' she said.
"If you ring up different centres they will quote their childcare fees depending on different arrangements, whether or not for example, food is included or nappies are included.
"This gives people an ability to compare things on a direct basis.''
The website would bring "new transparency'' to childcare services.
Child health expert Professor Fiona Stanley says the website will also improve the quality of child care.
"There will be a sense that they (childcare providers) will want to provide the parents out there (with) the best child care that they can,'' she said.
About 8000 childcare services have already provided voluntarily information for publication. |
