Settlers refuse to live in NSW
December 27, 2006 12:00 Article from: The Daily Telegraph
NSW has been shunned by overseas migrants, attracting a lower proportion of settlers this year than at any time in the past two decades.
The state holds the honour of hosting Australia's first European settlers but modern migrants are a fussier bunch.
NSW managed to lure just a third of all settlers in Australia – compared to a figure of 45 per cent a decade ago.
The booming economies of Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia have been successful in luring settlers away from NSW and its capital, Sydney.
The slump coincides with a leap in Sydney's cost of living.
The Economist Intelligence Unit's cost of living index put Sydney as the 16th most expensive city to live in this year, up from 25th the year before.
The strong dollar and soaring petrol prices drove Sydney up the ladder.
Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone said 44,661 migrants moved to NSW, out of a national total of 131,000 in 2005-06, up 8000 on the previous year.
China was the state's largest source of migrants with 5296, while 4561 arrived from Britain, 4615 from India, 1017 from Sudan and 1550 from Iraq, Senator Vanstone said.
"Sydney has a long history of attracting migrants because of employment opportunities, family links and the existence of well-established migrant communities within the city," Senator Vanstone said.
"A network of support services has now been established in regional NSW and throughout Australia and this has made it more attractive for migrants to live and work away from the big metropolitan centres of Sydney and Melbourne."
Overall, British and Irish migration jumped almost 30 per cent to 25,000 last year – but NSW secured just 5000 of those settlers.
A dip in Chinese arrival numbers was offset by increases in Koreans, Indians and Afghanis.
There has been a significant shift from family reunion-style visas to skilled migrant visas in the past decade, with 60,000 of the 131,000 arrivals to Australia in the past year in the skills category.
Sudanese migration slumped from 5654 to 3783, with a third settling in NSW.
