A spear fisherman who went missing off a northern Sydney beach at the weekend was a skilled diver with more than five years' experience, friends say.

Blakehurst man Brian Lam, 31, went spear fishing with three others in cold waters off Collaroy on Sunday morning.

He failed to return with the group and emergency services were called about 12.45pm but couldn’t find him.

Friends said Mr Lam founded the Ocean Buddy Dive Club and was unlikely to make silly errors.

"I’m very confident that he knows his way around," friend Raymond Yan told News Limited.

"He goes diving every weekend so it’s not like he hadn’t done it for a while and was rusty; he knows his safety procedures very well."

"We hope it wasn’t a shark but don’t want to speculate."

Another friend, Vivian Chan, said Mr Lam taught many people to dive and went spear fishing at least once or twice a week, although not always on the Northern Beaches.

Mr Lam, a banker with HSBC and keen adventure sportsman, documented many spear fishing trips in and around Sydney, in Tasmania, and on the NSW South Coast on Facebook.

Friends flooded the 31-year-old’s Facebook page with notes wishing for his safe return.

"Brian, praying that God will watch over you tonight and return you to us safely in the morning," one friend wrote.

"You love the sea so much may it hold you carefully tonight and let us have you back as the sun rises."

Mr Lam’s girlfriend, Wendy Yan, was preparing to help with the search effort today.

Divers and Polair will continue their search for the missing man at 8.30am today.

HE IS missing in the cold waters off Collaroy but his family is not giving up hope spear fisherman Brian Lam will be found alive.

The 31-year-old experienced dive instructor wore a bright yellow wetsuit, snorkel mask, weight belt and spear gun to go out with three mates off Fisherman's Beach.

He was last seen at 11.30am yesterday but by last night only his spear gun and dive buoy with a brace of fish and wobbegong attached were found.

Family and friends of Mr Lam, a banker from Blakehurst, converged on the beach armed with binoculars and prayers that he hadn't been taken by a shark, trapped in an underwater cave or washed out to sea.

His girlfriend Wendy Yan pleaded for any information that could help find him.

"If anyone has seen anything, or knows anything that will help us find him, please let us know,," she said.

"He was close to shore, only 50m out, and it wasn't a really big dive so we're all very surprised by what's happened."

His friend Raymond Yan said Mr Lam, chairman of the Ocean Buddy Dive Club, was too experienced to make silly mistakes or errors.

"I'm very confident that he knows his way around," Mr Yan said.

"He goes diving every weekend so it's not like he hadn't done it for a while and was rusty, he knows his safety procedures very well. We hope it wasn't a shark but don't want to speculate."

Sharks are regularly seen at the spot.

Michael Brown of Surf Watch aerial patrol flew over the area where the diver went missing but said he had not seen any sharks.

"I went along the entire coast but I didn't see any sharks but I have been hearing reports of sightings," he said.

Assistant scuba instructor Mr Lam, who was originally from Hong Kong, and his friends launched themselves into the water off the rock edge. He placed his dive marker about 50m away, as he does most weekends.

Detective Inspector Graham Cope said police divers were searching rock ledges and underwater caves as deep as 9m off the beach's rocks, a potential trap for wayward divers. Police will resume their search today.

早上来上班，接到朋友的邮件，看到Brian 失踪了，觉的很是突然。认识Brian 是通过一个朋友介绍的，他很还潜水， 还跟朋友成立了一个潜水网站，个性非常开朗，。。。。。。

在写的时候，朋友打来电话周一早上的搜寻在8：30开始了，目前只找到了鱼叉，一想到 。。。。。。， 大家来祈祷Brian 可以安全回来

还是无法静下心来，一个很开朗，非常阳光的大男孩一直浮现在脑海中，Brian给人的感觉非常的健康，就像他的肤色一样。 我跟他认识好几年了，一起去Campe, 他还很通过邮件告诉每次他潜水网站的更新，邀请大家浏览他在潜水的照片。
昨天早上他和3个朋友去了Dee Why 海滩,在约定的中午时间，他的2个朋友无法等到他，在报警后警察展开的搜查，但是到下午5点还是没有任何发现，警察决定在周一上午继续搜查，但是Brian 的女朋友和他的好朋友在晚上继续在海上搜寻，但是还是没有任何结果。  到昨天晚上10：30，Brian 已经失踪超过12个小时。。。。

Police divers have found the body of a man believed to be missing spear fisherman Brian Lam 100 metres off a beach in Sydney’s north.


Mr Lam, 31, a skilled diver with more than five years' experience, had been spear fishing with three others off Collaroy yesterday morning but failed to return with the group.

His body was found at noon today.
