Chinese artists usher in Year of the Ox
February 02, 2009 12:00am Article from: The Daily Telegraph
BRIGHT lights, colourful costumes and the best of Australian and Chinese cultures were on display last night as Sydney welcomed its first twilight Chinese New Year's parade.
The stunning procession - showcasing lion dancers, giant lanterns and illuminated floats - wowed a crowd of 60,000 spectators lining the streets.
City of Sydney Mayor Clover Moore said the first Chinese New Year's parade 10 years ago had just 100 participants and 200 spectators. Last night's extravaganza included 500 participants who travelled from Henan Province in China and more than 2000 from Sydney.
Spectators were treated to 22 colourful floats, five of which were brought from Henan, along with their spectacular martial arts performers.
Twelve giant lanterns, each representing a symbol of the Chinese Zodiac, were part of the procession, as well as gold diggers from Australia's 19th century, fire dancers and acrobatic performers.
Carlton resident Helen Li brought her son David Yang, 12, to the parade to teach him about his heritage.
"Every year we come here. We have to show our children about their culture," Ms Li, 43, said.
The Chinese New Year festivities run until February 15. |
