MELBURNIANS have copped the coldest July nights since 1998, but not everyone is complaining.
Skiers and snowboarders have been diving into some huge snowfalls.
Snow-goers at most of Victoria's mountains enjoyed more than one metre of cover yesterday, and more white gold is expected.
This comes as the average night minimum temperature for Melbourne in July slipped to just 6.8C, according to the weather bureau.
It's the coldest July nights we have faced in a decade, but this was still just above Melbourne's 6.5C average.
And if you could rug up for the night, the days were easier to cope with this year, with an average temperature of 14.1C, the warmest in two years.
Elsewhere in the state the cold hit hard, with Mount Hotham having the coldest maximum average temperature - well below freezing, -1.7C.
Some chilly minimum average temperatures for July were found at Nhill (3.4), Shepparton (3.1) and Strathbogie (1.9).
Senior forecaster at the bureau Terry Ryan said it was a "return to a more typical cold winter".
Mr Ryan said Victoria also had less rain than the past couple of July months, despite several cold systems lurking around the state.
While much more rain was needed to fill dams, the good news was that most of Victoria has a 50 per cent chance of wet weather continuing for the next three months.
Mr Ryan said after a slow start to the snow season, things had cranked up a gear in the past couple of weeks.
"There's heaps of snow, there's more than a metre at most resorts, and all lifts seem to be open," he said.
"It will be a good August, there's enough snow there and it's cold enough to keep it like that."
