A nozzle approach: Vi Hoang sprays his shop for pests on Sunday.
Bandit cops a good spray
February 26, 2008 12:00am Article from: Herald Sun
INSECT repellent is just as good as capsicum spray for warding off bandits. Shopkeeper Vi Hoang reached for his trusty can of spray when a knife-wielding robber entered his milk bar and demanded money.
"I saw the police spray someone before and I thought, because it was my shop I'd do it," Mr Hoang said.
The would-be thief pulled a balaclava over his head as he entered the shop in Kingsville, in Melbourne's inner-west, about 8pm on Sunday.
Instead of following his demands, Mr Hoang sprayed him in the eyes and the robber fled empty-handed.
Mr Hoang, a father of three, was upset by the robbery bid.
"I'm still really shaky," he said yesterday.
"He pulled out a hat with the two holes and pulled it over his face.
"Then he pulled out the big knife and said he wanted some money. He kept saying, 'Give me the money' and I sprayed him."
Mr Hoang said his three children were watching TV at the back of the premises while his wife was cooking in the kitchen, unaware of the drama unfolding in the shop.
"I called my brother, Hoa, who was out the back and he come and the man ran away. Maybe he was scared as well."
Police said Mr Hoang's actions were not necessarily the best way to deal with an armed holdup.
The thief was last seen getting into a blue Holden sedan in nearby Bishop St.
