Hi all,
I'm employed by an Australian border agency, and have done my fair share of time stamping passports of travellers coming in & out of Australia.
My tips:
If you have an Australian passport – you need it to re-enter Australia. So take it with you!!
For departing Australia, you won't be stopped if you forget your Australian passport but have another passport instead. It will take longer though, as a more rigorous ID assessment is undergone. But you need the Aussie pp anyway to get back in, so just use it anyway. More than once, I have seen panicked travellers organising for friends to break into their house and speed their Aussie pp to them (not realising they needed it to get back in), or having to arrange for someone to express post it to their overseas hotel. Learn from their mistakes!!
Also – Customs/Immigration in Australia DO NOT CARE if you have the correct visa/permissions to go to the country you are departing for (that is your responsibility). The airlines do though, as they get heavily fined if they transport someone without the correct visa/passport.
Hence the comments above about the difference between "checking in" and "clearing Customs" – both have different requirements...
Confused yet? ;) Bottom line is – if you have dual citizenship, just take both your passports with you. It will save you a lot of headaches and wasted time... :)

我的建议：
如果你有澳洲护照-你需要它进入澳大利亚的。所以，一定带着它！ 见过很多次忘记了带澳洲护照的老外让他们的朋友跑到自己家里找澳洲护照的事情（他们忘了回澳洲还需要澳洲护照的）。还有让朋友用特快专递寄到国外住处的。不要犯同样的错误哦。
如果你是离开澳洲，即使你只带了其他国家的护照（比如中国护照，澳洲PR有效），而忘记了带澳洲护照，也不会阻止你出境的。只不过会耗费一点儿时间，因为要检查核实你的身份。反正得用澳洲护照回来，所以用澳洲护照多好。
并且，海关人员根本就不在乎你有没有合法签证/证件进入其他国家（那是旅客自己的责任）。但是呢，航空公司查得很严格，因为如果他们带一个没有合法证件的人去自己的国家会被罚的很重滴。
上面是说登机和过海关的区别 - 要求是不一样滴...
迷糊了没有呢?;）底线是：如果你是澳洲公民，但有其他国家（中国护照，澳洲PR有效），那就两本都带上吧。这会让你省很多烦心事的。
