It was the strongest quarterly growth since the March quarter 1976. Economists had expected 2.5 per cent quarter-on-quarter growth. The quarterly rebound steered the year-on-year contraction to 3.8 per cent from a contraction of 6.4 per cent in the previous quarter. Economists had forecast a contraction of 4.4 per cent. The combination of massive fiscal and monetary stimulus snapped a two quarter run of negative growth. The economy contracted 7 per cent in the second quarter following a 0.3 per cent contraction in the first quarter. The confirmation of a recovery comes after Reserve Bank of Australia governor Philip Lowe has told a Parliamentary committee fiscal stimulus has played a “critical role” in supporting the economy through the coronavirus pandemic and he now expected unemployment to peak between 7 per cent and 8 per cent.
