Forensic investigators have been called to a unit in Sydney's west, where two people are dead.

The alarm was raised when a person flagged down a passing ambulance just before 6pm (AEDT) today outside an apartment complex at Auburn.

Paramedics called police, who are treating the death as suspicious.

A crime scene has been established and part of the large apartment complex, on the corner of Queen Street and Harrow Road, has been cordoned off.

A police spokesman said the two bodies were of Asian appearance.

Officers were speaking to a number of other people inside the unit through an interpreter, he said.

Forensic officers are expected to be at the scene for several hours.

Bodies found in unit block
http://www.smh.com.au/news/natio ... /1226318841454.html

Police are investigating a possible double murder after the bodies of two women were found in a unit complex in Auburn last night.

Emergency services were called to the complex on the corner of Queen and Harrow streets about 6pm, said Detective-Inspector Paul Goddard, of Flemington Local Command.

"They found two people of Asian appearance deceased within the unit. Police are treating the deaths as suspicious."

Ambulance officers had found the bodies in a first-floor bedroom, and they had signs of injuries. The causes of the deaths were unknown late last night.

Inspector Pat Wunsch from Flemington Local Area Command said a neighbour first discovered the bodies in the apartment and then called police.

She had keys to the unit as many of the rooms in the apartment block are sub-let, he said.

He said the ages of the women have not been confirmed, "but they are certainly not elderly women''.

He also said there were no signs of forced entry and at this stage there are no signs of robbery.

About six people who police believed shared the apartment with the dead women were gathered outside the building. They were being interviewed last night.

Officers from the public order riot squad searched the complex, trawling through plant beds and garden areas. Dozens of residents from the surrounding buildings gathered outside the block, some in shock, as they watched the investigation unfold.

Forensics officers and Homicide Squad detectives were at the apartment complex overnight and remained there this morning.

The bodies of the two women were taken to Glebe Morgue about 3.30am, where they will undergo a post mortem.

A cause of death report is expected to be handed to police today.
Police interviewed a number of people from the block where the bodies were found, with the help of interpreters who spoke Cantonese and Mandarin.

One neighbour, who asked not to be named, said she had overheard police say there was a witness to the incident.

The neighbour said she had heard others talking about the sound of screams coming from the building shortly before emergency services personnel had arrived. "Apparently there was a woman screaming."

The Auburn Central unit complex, which has closed-circuit television, is a new development in one of the highest density residential areas in western Sydney.

It houses thousands of people, many of them families with young children.

The buildings range from four to 10 storeys.

Residents at Auburn murder scene reveal security fears

RESIDENTS have told of security fears and strange men loitering around the Sydney apartment block where two women have been found murdered in a bedroom.

Police today are interviewing the family who shared the Auburn flat with the young women, who were believed Asian students and aged between their late teens and early 20s.

They were found lying face down in a bedroom of the first floor apartment in the sprawling complex on the corner of Queen St and Harrow Rd about 5.50pm in Sydney's south-west last night.

It is the second horrific crime to hit the Asian community in Sydney recently after the shocking death of a woman who plunged to her death from her Waterloo apartment block after she and her boyfriend were allegedly subjected to a vile sexual attack.

At Auburn today, police so far have not revealed how the women died in the latest murder but have said there were "visible signs of injury".

As detectives seek to formally identify the women, they have brought in interpreters to help with their investigation.

Forensic officers have already spent the night in the unit combing it for murder clues and the immediate area around the apartment remains sealed off as a crime unit.

Residents told The Daily Telegraph Online today that they were alarmed by the lack of security at the complex, complaining that many of the security doors were broken.

Two neighbours of the murdered women, Preeti Rajwani and Neelam Patel, said their deaths underlined their fears about the lack of security.

"It's terrifying. Yesterday we locked all our doors," said Ms Patel, 24, who lives on the ground floor below the murder apartment.

"We are thinking of moving out now ... for sure."

Ms Rajwani, 22, said there were often strangers loitering in the courtyard outside the apartments during the night.

The two victims are understood to have shared the unit with a family - a father, mother, two school-age children and a toddler.
James Kim, who lives in the unit above, said he was home at the time the bodies were discovered but heard no screams or any indication of violent struggle.

Mr Kim described the young women as quiet but friendly.

"They were just quiet, happy-go-lucky kids," Mr Kim said.

"It looked like they were here studying English."

Mr Kim said he was home throughout yesterday but heard nothing until police arrived.

"There were no loud sounds or any incidents or screaming involved at all," he said.

The alarm murder alarm last night was first raised when a person flagged down a passing ambulance in Auburn. The person led paramedics to a unit within the Auburn Central Apartment complex.

Detective Inspector Chris Goddard said police were yet to determine the age of the victims or whether they were related, but confirmed they both lived in the unit.

"There were signs of injury, but a post mortem will be prepared (today) to help us determine the nature and cause of death," he said.

Police had yet to locate a weapon but spent several hours scouring nearby shrubbery.

Investigators will also examine CCTV footage of people entering and leaving the building.

It took forensic officers four hours to arrive and they began examining the crime scene at 10pm.

Interpreters, including those who speak Mandarin, were brought in to help police talk to witnesses and residents of the large complex.

The unit block was cordoned off while police officers canvassed the area and spoke to residents.

About 100 residents gathered inside the complex, with many arriving home from work to find that they were barred from getting into their apartments.

Vikas Shah, 21, said: "I heard on the news that something had happened inside one of the units here so I came outside to find out.

"It's terrifying - I can't believe that something like this could happen here."

James Maana, 20, moved to the apartment block just one week ago.

"I came outside my apartment for a walk to find all these people and police here. It's scary something like this has happened here," he said.

Garry Zhang, 17, arrived at the apartment block about 8pm to find that he could not get past.

"My little sister is at home alone and I can't get inside," he said.

He said there had been a number of fights at the apartment block in recent weeks.

    * Were killed more than a day ago
    * Wounds reported to their throats

POLICE are investigating possible prostitution links in the murder of two women in a Sydney flat who were dead for days before their bodies were discovered.

The two women, believed to be aged in their 20s or early 30s, were found dead in a bedroom in the suburb of Auburn in Sydney's southwest.

It is understood both are believed to have suffered wounds to their throats.

Other people had been living in the unit with the bodies and it is unknown why it took so long for them to be detected.

A male occupant of the unit found the bodies about 6pm (AEDT) yesterday and went to an ambulance station nearby to report his discovery.

Superintendent Brett Henderson would not confirm suggestions the women were sex workers.

He said police had Department of Immigration officials working to establish the women’s immigration status.

A weapon had not been recovered, he said.

Police confirmed the pair, who were Chinese, were not believed to have been killed the day their bodies were discovered.

Bedroom bodies were decomposing

Police are trying to find out how long two Asian women had been dead in a western Sydney bedroom before their flatmates discovered their decomposing bodies.

Officers suspect the pair, in their late 20s or early 30s, were murdered.

Superintendent Brett Henderson says the women had suffered a number of injuries when their bodies were found on a bed inside the first-floor Queen Street apartment in Auburn about 6:00pm (AEDT) yesterday.

"There are a number of rooms within the unit and some other people do live there," he said. "They provided the information that they believe that the persons hadn't been seen for some time."

Many residents of the unit block do not speak English. Superintendent Henderson says language is proving to be a barrier for interviewing witnesses.

"We got a number of Mandarin interpreters last night in a number of different dialects," he said.

"Again this morning, we've been supported by the interpreter service to deal with the number of witnesses we've got."

'Happy-go-lucky kids'

Residents of the apartment complex have described the pair as young, quiet and friendly.

Neighbour James Kim says the women lived with a family and mostly kept to themselves.

"They were just happy-go-lucky kids," he said. "They looked like they were studying, learning English."

Mr Kim says there have been a number of incidents in the four years he has lived in the complex.

"There's been a stabbing, there's been bashings," he said. "There's been one death before as well."

Locals say they are frightened by the suspected killings and many have been worried about their safety for some time.

Dennis Wick, who manages the adjoining apartment block to the crime scene, says a decision had recently been made to boost security.

He says security guards were due to start patrolling the building 24 hours a day next week.

Mr Wick says the nearby shopping centre is beset by problems with gangs.

People living on the first floor of the apartment complex say they are particularly scared.

Resident Kim Ikwin says his family wants to move.

"They don't want to stay here any more," he said. "We're scared."

A post-mortem examination is being carried out to determine the cause of death.

Anyone with information about the deaths or who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Tragedy and chaos . . . the double murder scene.

Reeking of fear ... a resident watches the crime scene.

Two women lay dead for five days, nobody noticed

November 15, 2008 12:00am  Article from: The Daily Telegraph

TWO Chinese women found murdered with their throats slit in a sub-let room were killed up to five days before their bodies were found.

The pair, who have not yet been formally identified, were found decomposing, face-down on a bed in a room that they sub-let from the occupants of a first-floor apartment in Queen St, Auburn, about 6pm on Thursday.

Police are investigating reports the women, believed to have been on temporary visas, were advertised prostitution services in a Chinese newspaper.

Police still have no suspects for the murders and were working late yesterday to formally identify the pair, who are believed to be aged around 30. Reports they were sisters were unconfirmed, with both having different last names.

Police were trying to track down family members to perform a formal identification. It is believed the victims were killed between three and five days before they were found, but a post-mortem is expected to achieve a more certain time of death.

The boyfriend of one of the victims discovered the bodies inside the room, which was locked.

He then ran to a nearby ambulance station to report the discovery.

The pair had only lived at the unit complex for about two months
, but it is unknown when they arrived in Australia from China.

The unit complex was allegedly known to Auburn Council as a haven for illegal prostitution.

A council sign at the block warns tenants against overcrowding the units.

It stated up to 15 people had been caught residing in the one unit, adding walls to make two bedrooms into eight rooms and altering plumbing.

Dennis Wick, who is the new manager of one of the blocks in the complex, said doors were pulled off hinges the day after they were repaired by old managers because the residents were unwilling to pay $50 for an access card.

Chunks of rendering had come off the building, corridors stink, paint is fraying inside and exposed electrical wiring and sockets litter the garden.

"It has been like that for a long time," Mr Wicks said.

"The management would rectify the doors, replace the handles and glass and the next day they'd come along and find them broken again."

Residents said odour and litter were common, with each unit filled to well over capacity.

"They get more than five, six people, even eight people living in the units . . . people make it dirty," Ivan Liu said.

1. By law, the business owners are not allowed to take half of it. Has to be less than 50%.
2. I don't believe the girls would accept 50:50. I heard it's 70:30 (owners take 30%)
